Santa's Sleigh: Through the Decades

A Brief History of Santa's Reindeer

The Night Before Christmas

The poem "The Night Before Christmas" (originally titled "A Visit from St. Nicholas"), written by Clement Clarke Moore in 1823, is credited with popularizing the idea of Santa Claus flying in a sleigh pulled by eight reindeer. Moore named the reindeer Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, and Blitzen.

L. Frank Baum's Reindeer

In his 1902 book "The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus," L. Frank Baum (author of "The Wizard of Oz") expanded on Moore's list of reindeer and introduced Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Rudolph, with his glowing red nose, became a beloved character in the Christmas story.

Santa's Sleigh Today

The modern figure of Santa Claus flying in a sleigh pulled by eight reindeer is now widely recognized around the world. Santa's sleigh is often depicted as being made of wood and metal, with a red and white color scheme. The reindeer are usually shown as having antlers adorned with bells and ribbons.
