Mario Andretti Takes Pole, Graham Hill Wins

Race Recap

The 1966 Indianapolis 500 was the 50th running of the race, held on May 30, 1966. Mario Andretti started on pole position, but it was Graham Hill who took the checkered flag for the win. The race was held on a 4.025-mile (6.478 km) oval track, and the total distance of the race was 500 miles (805 km). The race was a close one, with Hill taking the lead on the final lap and holding on for the win.

The race was also notable for the return of the Lotus turbine car, which had been disqualified from the previous year's race. The car was driven by Parnelli Jones, who finished in second place behind Graham Hill.

Mario Andretti started in pole position, but Hill took the lead on lap 156. Jones challenged Hill for the lead, but Hill was able to hold on and win the race. The win was Hill's first Indy 500 victory, and he became the first British driver to win the race since Jim Clark in 1965.
