Islam Makhachev Defends Lightweight Belt at UFC 302

Poirier's Title Hopes Dashed in Newark

In a thrilling back-and-forth battle at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, Islam Makhachev has successfully defended his UFC lightweight title by submitting Dustin Poirier in the final round.

Makhachev, who entered the fight as a heavy underdog, dominated the grappling exchanges and used his superior wrestling skills to take Poirier down repeatedly. Despite Poirier's relentless striking and determination, Makhachev maintained control and eventually secured a rear-naked choke in the fourth round.

With this victory, Makhachev improves his record to 27-1 and remains the undisputed lightweight champion. Poirier, who drops to 30-10 (1 no-contest), was making his first attempt at the undisputed title after holding the interim belt earlier in his career.
