Miami Dolphins Release Cornerback Xavien Howard

Contract Dispute Leads to Departure

The Miami Dolphins have released cornerback Xavien Howard, the team announced on Tuesday. The move comes after Howard and the Dolphins failed to agree on a new contract.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Howard was seeking a contract worth $25 million per year, while the Dolphins were willing to offer $15 million per year.

Howard, who was set to make $12.1 million in the final year of his contract, was unhappy with his current deal and had been holding out from offseason workouts.

The Dolphins had been trying to trade Howard for several weeks, but were unable to find a suitable deal. The team ultimately decided to release him rather than pay him the $25 million he was seeking.

Howard, a three-time Pro Bowler, was one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL last season. He had four interceptions and 20 passes defended in 16 games.

The Dolphins are now expected to sign a veteran cornerback to replace Howard. Some potential candidates include Richard Sherman, Aqib Talib, and Janoris Jenkins.
