Navin Ramgoolam: A Lifetime of Service and Controversy

Early Life and Education

Navin Ramgoolam was born on 14 July 1947, in Belle Rive, Mauritius. He is the son of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, the first Prime Minister of Mauritius. Ramgoolam received his early education at St. Esprit College in Quatre Bornes, Mauritius. He then went on to study law at the University of London, where he was awarded a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree in 1970.

Political Career

Ramgoolam entered politics in 1976, when he was elected to the Mauritian Parliament as the member for Triolet. He was appointed Minister of Justice and Attorney General in 1982, and in 1995, he became the Prime Minister of Mauritius. He served as Prime Minister until 2000, and again from 2005 to 2014.

Controversies and Scandals

Throughout his political career, Ramgoolam has been involved in a number of controversies and scandals. In 1999, he was accused of involvement in the murder of a political opponent, and in 2015, he was arrested and charged with money laundering and corruption.
